The earth is red. The iron ochre has given it its name. 10 kilograms roasted red earth produces 2 kilograms malleable iron. The name of the place is Röda jorden, Red Earth, and it lies at Riddarhyttan. This is a place where iron has been produced for over 2000 years.

Always open - with or without guides
Twice a year, on the well-visited "Röda jorden" days sooty smiths stoke the reconstructed furnaces, but you can visit the site whenever you like. Five of the pre-historic iron-producing sites have been linked together by a two kilometre long trail. There are information boards will guide you through the history of the area. If you require a guide contact Skinnskattebergs Tourist Office, telephone nr. 0222-450 45.
